Honestly?
I really thought Martin Baukin's earlier book on tea leaf
reading (Casual
Little Miracles) had pushed the envelope on interesting
and usable reading systems about as far as it could go,
but I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong. I was very impressed
with these, and I think you will be, too, when you see what
Larry and Ron have come up with this time.
Before
we get into details, I thought I'd share a few thoughts
that might put the two ebooks in a little bit of perspective.
I mean, why would you want to take the time and trouble
to learn the seemingly-arcane systems taught in AT THE
CROSSROADS and BY the EYE of Our SPIRIT?
Now,
to be fair, the next several paragraphs are decidely editorial
in nature, so if you're in a hurry (who's not, really?),
you might want to skip to this section.
The
Advantages of Unique and Full-Featured Systems
Someone
wrote a while ago saying they were thinking of buying Ron
Martin's PALM
READER'S NOTEBOOK, but they weren't interested in
learning a full system, only enough for quick and entertaining
10-minute readings -- would I recommend Ron's book for them?
I have to admit, I was a little surprised that someone would
want to buy a book that contained less, when they
could get get a book that had everything needed for
anything from a quick reading to a full one-hour reading.
My
immediate inclination was to just email the person back,
say "No, this isn't the book for you", and move on. In the
end, I did tell the person that if he was specifically looking
for something that would teach him only enough for a quick
reading, that the detail provided in PALM READER'S NOTEBOOK
would definitely be overkill. I did, however, give a lot
of thought to the question, and why it's almost always a
good idea to learn a full system vs. an abbreviated form
of the system.
Putting
aside the question of value, I think it really comes down
to flexibility and capability, and the benefits those two
attributes offer.
So,
let's first look at the flexibility aspect.
If
All You've Got Is A Hammer...
Would you try to build a house if all you had was a hammer?
Of course not. And while you may think the metaphor is not
applicable to the question at hand (full vs. "quick and
easy" systems), think again.
If
you know the full system, you always have the option of
picking and choosing what material you're going to build
into a quick reading, but with a so-called "quick and easy"
system, once you've gone through the limited material, you're
done. Not only literally (as in, you have nothing more to
say), but also figuratively, in the sense that if the person
you're reading for has a question that you can't answer,
they will no longer consider you to be the expert that you'd
like them to think you are.
And
don't think for a moment that you can brush a client's question
off with some canned, BS answer -- if you think the client
can't pick up on that, you're underestimating their perceptive
abilities, and overestimating your ability to con them.
After
putting in all the time and effort to get the booking (including
learning a system, creating marketing and advertising, contacting
prospective clients and securing work), why would you not
want to be considered the expert in your field? By the way,
that's not a rhetorical question -- you may have perfectly
valid reasons why you don't want to be perceived as an expert,
but if you do, you should certainly examine how those reasons
might make you want to reconsider your choices of what you
undertake to learn.
Quick
and Easy?
When
you put the time it takes to learn a full system into perspective
with all of the other components necessary for becoming
a working pro, we're not talking about a lot of time. We're
not, after all, talking about learning the ins and outs
of brain surgery, and besides -- isn't this field something
you enjoy spending time on? If it's not, ask yourself why
you're doing it in the first place.
As
for "easy", take it from someone who's always been "learning-challenged"...
learning a full system is no harder than mastering a good
billet move, and ultimately it's a very portable skill that
you'll always have.
Now,
the additional capability that comes once you've added that
skill to your toolkit allows you to increase your bottom
line, since one of the frequent outcomes of a quick entertainment-style
reading is that the person will often ask if you offer full
readings. If you'd like to get that additional revenue,
but you've already exhausted your command of the system
you're using, you're really up the proverbial creek without
a paddle, and I would argue that in your pursuit of a quick
and easy system, you've sold yourself seriously short.
Why
You Should Be Special
At
the risk of asking a rhetorical question, what's the advantage
of being an expert? Well, as an expert, your perceived value
to the client is considerably higher. Recently, I heard
from a friend whose booking agent had lost a valuable contract
to a competitor who was booking readers for half the price.
As a result, my friend was experiencing a significant drop
in revenue. You've probably heard of (or, more likely, experienced)
something similar, and it's not unexpected in this financial
climate.
(Just
as a quick aside, I've never understood why amateurs work
cheaply. You can work a lot at $25 a reading, but only make
$500, or work a little at $100 a reading and still make
$500. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I'd rather do one-fifth the
work and get paid the same.)
One
way to preserve your perceived value is to have the ability
to offer your prospective clients something truly unique,
something that very few amateurs (if any) even know about.
I'd like to think that's where the Pro Shop can be of invaluable
assistance to you, because I believe that's our specialty
-- offering unique oracle products for the professional
who has already mastered the standards and is looking for
something to set themselves apart from the rest of the crowd.
Which
brings us (finally!) to the two Martin Baukin ebooks. First,
AT THE CROSSROADS...
AT
THE CROSSROADS:
Throwing The Bones
&
Baukin's Cartomancy
AT
THE CROSSROADS is actually two books in one, and while
at first glance the topics covered (bone readings and playing
card readings) may seem to be an odd pairing, once you've
read both you'll understand how perfectly they go together.
"Wait
-- did you say bone readings?".
That
was my response when Ron first shared with me what Martin
Baukin was working on.
"That's
right," Ron said. "People will want a bone reading because
it's unique, interesting and new. They'll walk away stunned
and impressed with how much information was available from
only seven and a half bones. It always far exceeds their
expectations. Then word gets around and you'll be very busy!"
Experience
has taught me to check my skepticism at the door whenever
I talk with Ron, especially in light of what he and Larry
Baukin have done with seemingly obscure divination systems.
They are well-known for their hidden systems -- the unseen
methods that can make cowrie shells, wax drippings, tea
leaves or a handful of cards speak volumes.
Imagine
my surprise when I received the manuscript and learned that
you can easily get as much information from seven and a
half bones as you can when using a full deck of playing
cards!
And
the reading itself is incredibly simple:
Draw
your circle (the Crossroads) with chalk, or use a chain,
a circle of small stones, or a line of colored sand.
Then
throw out your seven and a half bones with their primitive
markings.
Add
a candle for atmosphere, and you're ready to amaze and fascinate!
Throwing
The Bones
Both
dramatic and rarely seen, the Martin Baukin bone reading
system teaches you how to come up with enough information
from just a handful of bones to carry a half-hour reading.
And that's not really surprising, since over the past decade,
Larry and Ron have created a very solid central core of
systems that allows the well-practiced reader to use pretty
much any reading tool (or none at all) as a basis for a
very wide-ranging reading.
As
with all of the Martin Baukin systems, the methods taught
in AT THE CROSSROADS will be well-hidden and not
apparent at all to the client who experiences the reading.
And here's a real bonus for the working pro:
Parts
of the reading will be available for your own recall, many
months later, apparently through your own psychometry, intuition
or psychic abilities. You will be able to hold the client’s
hand, or a piece of their jewelry, and ‘sense’ a few of
the elements of their previous reading. Needless to say,
this is a major convincer, and an impressive part of your
reading that few others (you know, the ones who are willing
to work at half-price) will be able to duplicate.
By
the way, the Martin Baukin bone reading can be played as
lightly or as seriously as you wish.
Now,
lest you think bone readings are just some theoretical creation
confined to the pages of some ebook, you should know that
Larry and Ron are top-shelf working professionals and give
readings every week of the year, so when they're doing research
on their new ideas, they have the perfect ‘laboratory’ setting.
This means they're able to work all of the potential bugs
out of a system before they start writing about it, so you
know you're getting a tried and true system.
Here's
a partial listing of the Throwing The Bones part
of AT THE CROSSROADS...
|
How to make your own set of bones
Complete bone marking system (the key to the system)
How to construct the "Crossroads Circle" (and Ron's
preferred method)
How to describe all of the elements of the client's
life
What your clients want to know the most
How to use the bones to determine the timing of important
events
Multiple methods for determining timing
How to blend numerology with bone reading
In-depth explanation of the process with many examples
How to use a pendulum with the bones system
|
Ron
also briefly explains his traditional method for overlaying
the meanings of playing cards, which is expanded even further
in the second part of the ebook -- Baukin's Cartomancy.
Add
More Meat to the Bones...
...
with Baukin's Cartomancy, the second part of AT
THE CROSSROADS.
Baukin's Cartomancy is a very straightforward look at
readings with playing cards from a more psychological perspective,
rather than the familiar metaphysical basis. While Larry
encourages you to develop your own collection of meanings
and lines, he also goes through every card in the deck and
gives his own favorite lines that he's created and honed
over a lifetime of readings.
Of
special interest to both veteran and beginning readers alike
is Larry's approach to court cards. Court cards in both
the Tarot and regular playing cards can be a bit of a challenge
for many new or inexperienced readers. Larry offers here
a very direct, simple-to-remember approach based on workable,
everyday, down-to-earth psychology. The system you will
learn in Baukin's Cartomancy is not only practical,
but easy for your client to apply to their own life situations
and relationships. Use this simple and accurate principle,
and you'll be astounded at how easily it fits and hits your
clients.

BY
the EYE of Our SPIRIT
by
Martin
Baukin
|
Rather
than reinvent the wheel, I'll let Ron explain what BY
the EYE of Our SPIRIT is all about by reproducing here
a few excerpts from the book's Introduction:
|
"In
my youth, I spent many warm, sunny afternoons at Lily
Dale, the Spiritualist Camp in New York, listening
to the public readings in the small amphitheater,
since I was too young to accompany my parents into
the ‘grown up’ private séances in darkened rooms.
My earliest impression of what readings were like
was based on these examples by some of the best psychics
of the time.
In
my twenties, as I began doing my own readings based
on the Tarot, I found the old psychics’ way of speaking
to be very poetic and flowery – or so I would have
told you at the time, I’m sure. I tried to avoid sounding
so much like some old-time, effete, love-struck British
poet who’d had a bit too much laudanum and/or wine.
This
clinical approach didn’t do my readings any good,
I see, in retrospect. It took quite a while before
I realized how matter-of-fact, heartless and unemotional
my readings could sound, although that’s not how they
were intended. I was, after all, quite young.
Today,
there are many readers who have learned to incorporate
imagery, similes and metaphors into their readings,
but far too often the pictures that they describe
are things that are very subjective, random or only
vaguely linked to the matter at hand.
In
researching images for a small Martin Baukin booklet
involving symbols that we wrote a decade ago, and
then again with the tea leaf book (Casual Little Miracles)
we wrote more recently, we realized how many images
seemed universal. Beyond that, it struck Baukin that
many of these pictures seemed to fit very comfortably
within the Myers-Briggs system of psychological types.
Images
have always been a part of our readings, although
they were used more often as mnemonic devices to remember
a number of familiar paragraphs that have proven to
be useful and well received. When Baukin clearly saw
that many of the symbols that we kept seeing over
and over in our research matched up with the verbal
descriptions of the various Jungian and Myers-Briggs
types of people, he realized that this correlation
could organize the use of symbols in readings in a
way that had not been quite so clearly done before.
Only
a few authors over the past decade or so have attempted
to link a mix of specific symbols and psychological
systems to readings, but we felt that usually the
symbols that they used, although sometimes clever,
were often their own private, personal interpretations
that seemed rather arbitrarily chosen. Baukin felt
that disguised descriptions of the Myers-Briggs/Jungian
types, through the use of recognizable, universal
symbols, would strike the clients as far more meaningful
and accurate than the unique, home-grown ramblings
that we hear from the usual shut-eye psychics that
we encounter all the time."
|
In
BY the EYE of Our SPIRIT, you will learn a complete
system of images, symbols, metaphors -- essentially, pictures.
Each picture relates directly to one of the standard eight
Myers-Briggs types. To quickly learn these types, you are
given a simple template that, once you're familiar with
them, also acts as a handy reference tool.
Next,
you will find a chart with the eight indicators listed,
plus a description of four separate symbols or pictures,
each of which relates to one of the Myers-Briggs labels.
Following
this, you will find interpretations for each symbol picture
-- the same interpretations that Ron and Larry use when
giving their own professional readings.
Finally,
you are taught a simple mnemonic technique for easily and
quickly recalling each of the four pictures assigned to
each single indicator. This technique will enable you to
use from one to sixteen completely different images to accurately
describe your sitter during a reading.
Accurate
and Powerful Readings
By
combining the psychologically-valid principles of the well-known
Myers-Briggs system with the easy-to-remember Martin Baukin
symbols, you will ultimately be able to successfully give
an accurate and powerful, psychologically-based reading.
The
method is, of course, deeply buried in these pictures. To
the client, however, your reading does not appear to be
a mere psychological profile -- it appears to be coming
straight out of an intuitive or psychically-based inspiration.
Since
this system marks somewhat of a departure from traditional
ways of reading symbols, Ron and Larry also include numerous
sample readings, plus valuable tips and clues on how to
use your knowledge of the eight types to size up your prospective
client within seconds of meeting them.
To
make this a complete package, you'll also learn Martin Baukin's...
Guaranteed
Success Techniques
In
addition to the simple-to-learn system detailed in the pages
of BY the EYE of Our SPIRIT, Ron and Larry have included
a bonus section that can be used independently of their
symbol system, featuring a technique Ron has been holding
onto for over 20 years. With it, you will have an easy and
effective technique to present readings while your mind
is learning and becoming comfortable with the symbols. The
ideas in this bonus section are designed to keep your thoughts
free to focus on the main body of the work.
And
the beauty of the Martin Baukin system is that, as you experiment
with the concepts laid out in BY the EYE of Our SPIRIT,
you will discover that the system can be used with virtually
any cold reading and/or divination system you wish to apply
it to.
